Job Summary:
The Assistant Coach is responsible for providing coaching for rowing participants including technical skills development, fitness and conditioning, recruiting, team building, and conflict resolution while maintaining a positive and inspiring attitude, exhibiting good sportsmanlike conduct, and professionally representing the Club and its rowing programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
The position involves 0-30 hours per week providing support to the Head Coach, as needed to complete the following:
Team Development:
Embrace and support the mission of ZLAC Rowing Club.
Teach rowing to Learn-to-Row participants, and provide coaching to all novice, intermediate, and advanced rowers in a calm, constructive, and clear manner.
Evaluate performance and instruct athletes ensuring the safest environment while developing abilities achieve personal and group goals.
Demonstrate a strong and current knowledge of USRowing rules.
Promote the rowing programs within ZLAC and the related community.
Develop relationships in the San Diego community and establish a presence via Learn To Row camps, coaching clinics and private lessons
Skills & Expertise (Include relevant education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities required):
Required:
1-3 years of coaching experience or relevant leadership within rowing team
A strong working knowledge of the fundamentals of rowing; USRowing Level 1 certification or willingness to obtain as skill and opportunity avail
Proven experience and knowledge or safe rowing equipment handling protocol Knowledge of waterways and boating safety; California Boater Card or willingness to obtain within first month of employment
First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain within the first month of employment
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal
Strong leadership skills, with the ability to lead practices effectively and independently
The ability to resolve professional and interpersonal problems in a constructive and productive manner
The ability to multitask with a proven track record of success in coaching and competitions
The ability to work with all skill levels and to be a good motivator and decision maker
Excellent time management and organizational skills
The willingness and ability to take direction and perform other duties as necessary and as assigned by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Chair(s)
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: dexterity of hands and fingers, arms, legs, and feet to demonstrate and participate in sport activities; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; standing and sitting for extended periods of time; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching; hearing and speaking to exchange information; vision to see individual and team performance; carrying, pushing or pulling of athletic and coaching equipment. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is generally exposed to: indoor and outdoor work environment; driving a vehicle to conduct work, seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions; variable hours including weekdays, weekends, early mornings, and evenings. Occasional travel may be needed.
